Module 1

Module 1; Lesson 1

Leadership is the greatest of human skills. The ability to influence yourself, inspire others, and impact the world determines the course of your life.

The world we inhabit is VUCA—Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. Leadership is the gift a VUCA world needs, yet at the very moment we need it most, we trust it least. Our culture is more cynical about leadership than ever.

We are stuck in a looping posture toward leadership, a cycle where we Deify leaders who inspire us, Demonize them when they inevitably disappoint us, eventually Denying leadership altogether until crisis ensues and a new leader rises from the rubble, inspires a critical mass, and promises to lead us into the future we’ve always imagined.

…Then, they fail. And the cycle begins again.

If we would break the cycle and become the kind of leaders our teams, organizations, families, and world needs, we must embrace a new kind of leadership—one predicated upon character and culture, not merely competency.

It’s time to draw a circle.

Reflection: Your Relationship With Leadership

Consider the leaders you follow now, the leaders you’ve trusted in the past, leaders who have surprised or disappointed you, and your own leadership style.

Reflection Questions

What do the leaders you’ve trusted in the past reveal about what you hope for, and what do the ones who’ve disappointed me reveal about what you fear?

Which leaders in my life today inspire or motivate me, and what characteristics draw me to them?

How have the best and worst leaders in your life (present and past) shaped your overarching view of leadership? Are you more cynical, hopeful, fearful, confident, or ambivalent toward leadership as a result of your influences?

What in your own leadership style draws others to you? What might push them away? How do you think those you lead perceive leadership as a result of your influence?
